Cancer Coaching is a Process of Discovery
May 06, 2025
One way to understand coaching is to look at this two by two table:
Square 1 What the client knows but the coach doesn’t know |
Square 2 What neither the coach nor the client knows |
Square 3 What the coach knows and what the client knows |
Square 4 What the coach knows but the client doesn’t know |
Inspiring, significant, and substantial changes happen when the coach and the client are exploring the space of Square 2. Curiosity lives here – walking into an unfamiliar space and seeing new ideas, perspectives, awareness, and possible actions.
This is particularly relevant for the cancer journey! It is an unfamiliar space with new and challenging obstacles – and believe it or not - opportunities.
For example, prior to my cancer diagnosis, I thought I had a good handle on my insecurities and self-esteem. I had worked hard to be more present and emotionally whole in my life.
But when cancer came, all my insecurities came back – and they were bigger!
And if you pause to think about it – it would be weird if they didn’t.
Cancer is new, unfamiliar, potentially fatal, and scary! All the work I had done on “I Am Enough” – well obviously I’m not if I have cancer! And it spirals from there, if we let it, into our relationships with others, our identity – everything about us.
What I had to relearn was how much I loved myself, even though I had cancer. Both were true! How much others loved me – even though I had cancer and our relationship was changed because of it. Both were true! I had to learn that truth has a duality to it – ideas that might compete can actually both be true!
This was one of the insights I discovered in my own Square 2 space – where cancer was my teacher.
Coaching is a process of powerful questions, deep listening, and communication. It is a process of discovery! Cancer turns your life upside down – coaching is a process of recreating your life, of reclaiming your life. It is a process that helps you become!
Cancer has changed you and threatens to take over your life – coaching is a way to take control of that change process and exercise your ability to become someone you live - and with cancer too! Both can be true! It may be a shift in perspective, exploring a relationship - everyone's journey is unique. But the outcome is beautiful!
